Asif Khan is bringing greenery to the concrete streets of Shoreditch during London Design Festival with three plant-filled ‘rooms’, dubbed MINI Living Forests.

The British designer has recreated the greenery, smell and feel of a woodland setting for each installation. Created for car brand MINI, they cues from the Japanese idea of shinrin yoku, or forest bathing.

Each light-filled pavilion – themed ‘Create’, ‘Connect’ and ‘Relax’ – is open to the public and serves its own function.

’Create’ provides space for breakout meetings and work, while ‘Connect’ allows individuals to gather for conversation. Here the benches transform into a work table that runs down the centre of the room.

‘Relax’, meanwhile, invites people to do just that: sit back and take a breath… Once you’ve climbed into it, that is. This box-like structure is mounted on stilts to block out noise from the nearby road, with plants lining its interior ledge.

MINI Living Forests is the latest pavilion-like project by Khan, who also created a summer house for the Serpentine Galleries earlier this year, and the Coca-Cola Beatbox at the London 2012 Olympics. The rooms will open to the public from 17-25 September.
