Mid-century time capsule hits the market for $3.495m in California

This midcentury house, designed by Bay Area architect Robert Steiner, has stayed true to its roots.

Built in 1958 for its current owners, 739 El Cerrito Avenue has been diligently maintained over the years and retains most of its original features including wood panelling, parquet flooring and extensive glazing.

Steiner’s practice was responsible for more than 500 building designs in and around the Bay Area of California. He is best known for his residential designs, particularly those from the 1950s and 1960s, including this 2,680 sq ft property.

The building – which is listed by McGuire Real Estate for $3.495m – bears the hallmarks of his best work, including tall ceilings, and extensive glass walls. In fact, the entire back end of the single-storey home features floor-to-ceiling glazing that opens onto a stilted deck area.

While areas of the house have been modernised – the kitchen has been kitted out with stainless steel appliances, and the plastered walls treated to a lick of white paint – it still maintains its original character.

It also comes with an outdoor pool.
