Plants burst out of the walls at Valencia’s Kaikaya sushi bar

Valencian sushi restaurant Kaikaya fuses Japanese and Brazilian influences in its tropical, plant-filled interiors.

Local studio Masquespacio was tapped to craft the restaurant’s brightly verdant interiors, which draw materials from both countries. Coloured tiles cover the walls of the restaurant, surrounding huge circles of raffia – chosen to represent the kasa hats worn in Japan.

Masquespacio retained the building’s beams and brick vaulted ceilings but have livened the space with dozens of tropical plants. A traditional Japanese wood pattern covers the bar, contrasted by coloured diamond patterns the studio borrowed from 1970s Brazilian Tropicália. Brass parrots perch on lighting behind the counter, and palm leaves appear on tables and walls throughout the restaurant.

Diners at Kaikaya can tuck into a fish-forward menu of Nipo-Brazilian Nikkei dishes, poke bowls, sushi nigiri and sashimi.
