YoDezeen Studio sought inspiration from 1920s New York to conjure the interiors of seafood restaurant Catch, on Kiev’s Volodymyrska Street.
Sitting within a historic building, Catch takes over a defunct restaurant. Says the practice: ‘The old space was a very gloomy with a lot of unnecessary decor, multi-level platforms and design from 2001.’ Balconies awkwardly broke up the vertical height of the space while light flow was restricted.
YoDezeen took it back to its bones, hollowing out the interior, and reimagining its cavernous volume as separate zones.
In the 70-cover ground floor dining hall, a three-metre seafood display takes centre stage next to the marble-topped bar, backed by glazed tiles the colour of seaweed and seawater. Raw brickwork, sandblasted concrete columns and metal surfaces nod to the building’s industrial past, while large mirrors exaggerate the volume of the space.
A solid oak communal table is crowned by huge chandelier fitted with 450 glass balls. Also in the space are olive trees and tanks filled with mussels, lobsters and crabs.
If the main hall is all about being airy and open, things take a cosy twist upstairs: the fine-dining area is marked with parquet floors and capped by a dark moulded ceiling strung with four chandeliers. Black and dark blue leather furniture channel the moody 1920s vibe.
Catch – which was shortlisted for the 2018 Restaurants & Bars Design Award – offers the most extensive selection of oysters and fish in the Ukrainian capital, served alongside 130 types of champagne.
