House of the week: architect Pat Killen’s beachside Los Angeles house

This 4,000 sq ft family home in Los Angeles fully embraces its sun-soaked Manhattan Beach setting.

Back in 2001, architect Pat Killen – founder of Studio 9 one 2 and a veteran of beach housing – created the open-plan property at the behest of its original owners: a volleyball-loving family, naturally.

Every design detail is geared towards creating an atmosphere in tune with beachside living, as well as making the most of the sunny locale.

The four-bedroom property’s simple material palette – concrete, raw wood, stucco and bright blue shingles – sets the tone for the home’s understated aesthetic.

Doors are few and far between, meaning rooms flow seamlessly into one another throughout the three-storey structure. Together with floor-to-ceiling glass, the open layout also means ocean views are on offer at almost every turn.

The Manhattan Beach home is available for $4.75 million (£3 million) via LA-based realtor The Agency.
