A colony of bats are circling the 18th-century Zalenieki Manor in Latvia’s Zemgale like a scene from a Batman film.
Architect Didzis Jaunzems designed the installation, creating a cloud of paper bats for the Nature Concert Hall – an annual celebration of science, drama, music and art.
The work serves as a backdrop for performing musicians, and can also function as a screen for video projections and light shows.
Says Jaunzems: ‘The volume of the cloud is referring to flocking bird and bat-created dynamic geometries that can be found in nature.’
It’s also designed to contrast with the Zalenieki Manor behind it. The stately home – designed by architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli – is now a vocational secondary school.
